The new Bill that is coming into effect today, March 31st, 2004 is Bill C-45 entitled Criminal Liability for Organizations.  Information about the Act includes:
"The new Act, an Act to amend the Criminal Code (criminal liability of organization) increases the risk of exposure to criminal liability in respect of workplace health and safety above and beyond the existing obligations and liabilities under Occupation Health and Safety legislation.  The Act imposes a duty on employers and those with the power to direct how others work to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the persons performing the work and of the public.  Employers need to ensure that they have implemented good workplace health and safety policies and practices, including employer due diligence.  They must also ensure that these practices are being consistently followed by senior officers as well as their employees and all other representatives.  A review of health and safety policies and practices is highly recommended including training and education".

Speaker
  • Joan Burton, Manager, Health Strategy

The topic for this evening will be Workplace Health.  Balancing Work and The Rest of Life Work-Life harmony.  Work-Family balance.  We all talk about it, we all bemoan the fact that whatever "it" is, we don't have it!  This presentation will outline the situation in Canada based on the latest work-life balance research findings.  It will discuss and explore ways employees can encourage positive change in their lives.  But the presentation will go beyond that to look at ways that proactive employers can support this balance in their employees' lives while also increasing productivity and profit.

Joan Burton(BSc, RN, MEd) is IAPA's Manager, Health Strategy.  She began her career with the IAPA in 1994, bringing increased emphasis on the "health" in "health and safety" within IAPA itself, and within its programs, products and services.  She was responsible for developing and establishing IAPA's internal health and wellness program, which was recognized as part of the reason that IAPA has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for the fourth year in a row in 2003.

Joan has developed a specialization in leadership issues and psychosocial risk management, and has recently been given responsibility for establishing national and international partnerships to promote workplace health.  In September 2003, she was recognized for her work in this field by being awarded the Canadian Workplace Wellness Pioneer Award at the annual Health, Work and Wellness Conference in Ottawa.
